Designed by journalists, for journalists, MedicareNewsGroup.com is an independent resource for Medicare news, policy and legislation with original and curated content. Optimized for reporters, writers, bloggers and editors who produce news and commentary on Medicare, MedicareNewsGroup.com aims to be a digital encyclopedia of Medicare that organizes past, current and future information, news, events, research and legislation relating to the topic.
Who We Are Open
Who We Are Today, 49 million Americans receive Medicare benefits; by 2030 that number will grow to 80 million. Unfortunately, dramatic changes in the newspaper industry have made coverage of this rapidly changing, complicated topic very challenging. Short on experience with the issues and constrained by limited time for research, journalists are forced to pick up “sound bites” from the political spectrum with little thought about the vast implications for our country and the health of its seniors. Media is relegated to superficial coverage that contributes to our citizen’s misunderstanding of the facts.
Out of this dilemma, The Medicare NewsGroup was formed to provide information and tools to support a more informed, intelligent discussion among all involved and affected by the future of this federal entitlement program. Designed by journalists, for journalists, The Medicare NewsGroup or MNG (www.medicarenewsgroup.com) is an independent resource for Medicare news, policy and legislation with original and curated content. Our distinguished Medicare Leaders Advisory Board that includes Stuart Altman, Bob Berenson, William Roper, and Gail Wilensky, past leaders of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Medicare Payment Advisory Commission or their predecessor organizations, ensure a balanced, non-partisan approach to understanding the complex issues facing the program’s future.
MNG seeks to be the single most comprehensive, integrated source of information on Medicare news, policy, legislation, and research available electronically and is already used by hundreds of journalists from media outlets across the country. Our core strategy of creating a trusted agent, first stop website on Medicare is complemented by two other strategies. The first is to build ‘Medicare literacy’ among journalists in collaboration with schools of public policy and professional journalism associations. As evidence of rapidly growing credibility with academia and the media industry, in the few months since launch in April of 2012, The Medicare NewsGroup is already collaborating with the University of Michigan School of Public Health, Columbia University Schools of Public Health and Journalism, APME (Associated Press Media Editors), SABEW (Society of American Business Editors and Writers), and The Poynter Institute for Media Studies among others, to educate journalists on the art and science of Medicare reporting. We recently received our first foundation grant from Robert R. McCormick Foundation in recognition of our growing accomplishments in this area. The second strategy is to stand up platforms for diverse stakeholders to engage in constructive exchange on the future of Medicare. On March 20, 2013, The Medicare NewsGroup sponsored its first event at the National Press Club in Washington.
The Medicare NewsGroup will launch a second website, The Medicare NewsDigest in May. Created to support professional audiences whose work depends upon understanding the current and future directions of Medicare, this site is designed to emphasize Medicare news in context.
The decisions made about Medicare’s future will have a profound impact on the costs, delivery and quality of health care for America’s seniors and disabled. It is imperative this discussion centers on facts, not politics. The Medicare NewsGroup is committed to elevating the national debate on Medicare to a more informed and intelligent conversation. Our Mission Our mission is to enhance the national discussion on Medicare by providing the information and tools to support a more informed, intelligent analysis of the various alternatives and their implications for Americans, now and in the future.
